A short group brainstorm created the starting point for the new design: construction, contrast, nerdy and architecture porn were the 4 keywords we tried to fix in the redesign.
We've always been known for our attention to typography - we used designer Laurenz Brunner's Akkurat typeface. Playing with the sizes and thicknesses of the font formed a unique way to enter the text for each section, supporting our like for contrast.
The overall layout sticks to a rigid and structured grid, but it's flexible enough to adapt to the text, images and drawings for every article. In the opening spreads for each section, different shapes were introduced as visual markers as a method of creating a simple but interesting distinction.
